Spatial Insights, Inc. announced today that it has completed the development of seamless Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data covering the continental United States. The DEM data were assembled from over 45,000 USGS 7.5’ quadrangles after systematically correcting for pre-existing artifacts. The 30-meter data are available as pre-assembled seamless coverages by county, metropolitan area (MSA), or by any custom client-specified boundary. DEM data with 10-meter resolution are also available over some selected areas.

“Many of our customers were interested in elevation data to help them address their GIS-based site selection and data visualization needs.” said Don Segal, President of Spatial Insights. “Although the raw data were available, poor packaging made it very difficult to work with. Dealing with the large number of quadrangles required to cover entire counties or metropolitan areas was also problematic for the majority of our customers. We felt that by providing the data pre-packaged as seamless coverages, that it would be much easier for our clients to load the data and to leverage the information within their GIS systems.”

The elevation data work directly with ArcInfoTM, ArcViewTM, MapInfo ProfessionalTM, Vertical MapperTM, or decibel PlannerTM, and are available in a number of industry standard formats, including .DEM, .GRD, and .MIG. Detailed product information, including pricing, is available.

Spatial Insights elevation data are used for 3-D visualization, slope analysis, line-of-sight studies, and site selection within the environmental, real estate and telecommunications industries.
